The currency used in Namibia is the Namibian Dollar (NAD). However, the South African Rand (ZAR) is also widely accepted as legal tender in Namibia, alongside the Namibian Dollar. The Namibian Dollar is divided into 100 cents, and banknotes are available in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 Namibian Dollars. It’s worth noting that the Namibian Dollar is pegged to the South African Rand at a 1:1 exchange rate, so either currency can be used interchangeably in Namibia.
When visiting Namibia, it is advisable to carry some local currency for day-to-day expenses, although major credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and larger establishments. USD, Euros and UK Pounds are also typically accepted.
Namibia primarily uses Type D and Type M power sockets and plugs.
Type D sockets, also known as the “BS 546” or “Indian” sockets, have three round pins in a triangular pattern. They are rated for 5 amps and are commonly used for smaller appliances.
Type M sockets, also known as the “South African” or “SABS 164” sockets, have three large round pins in a triangular pattern. They are rated for 15 amps and are used for high-power appliances such as air conditioners, refrigerators, and ovens.
It’s worth noting that some accommodations in Namibia, particularly in tourist areas, may also provide Type C sockets, commonly used in Europe. These sockets have two round pins and are rated for 2.5 amps. However, Type C sockets are less common in Namibia than Types D and M.
If you plan to travel to Namibia, it’s advisable to carry a universal travel adapter that can accommodate multiple plug types to ensure compatibility with various socket types.

In Namibia, the official language is English. However, Namibia is a linguistically diverse country with several other languages spoken by different ethnic groups. Some of the major languages spoken in Namibia include:
1. Oshiwambo: This language is spoken by the Ovambo people, who are the largest ethnic group in Namibia. It has several dialects, including Oshindonga, Oshikwanyama, and others.
2. Afrikaans: Afrikaans is widely spoken in Namibia. It is a West Germanic language derived from Dutch and is also spoken in South Africa.
3. Damara/Nama: These are two related languages spoken by the Damara and Nama people, respectively. They are both part of the Khoe-Kwadi language family.
4. Herero: Herero is a Bantu language spoken by the Herero people. It is also spoken by some Himba and Tjimba people.
5. German: Due to Namibia’s history as a German colony, German is still spoken by a small portion of the population, particularly among the older generations and in some official capacities.
6. Rukwangali: Rukwangali is a Bantu language spoken by the Kwangali people in the eastern Caprivi Strip region of Namibia.
7. Setswana: Setswana is a Bantu language spoken by the Tswana people in Namibia. It is also spoken in Botswana and South Africa.
8. Other languages: There are several other indigenous languages spoken by smaller ethnic groups in Namibia, such as the San languages (including Naro and Ju/’hoansi), Otjiherero, Himba, and others.

Namibia currently offers visa-free travel to most countries for stays up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least six months at the time of arrival into Namibia.

If you are travelling to Namibia from areas known to be infected with yellow fever, you must have a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. We advise our guests to also have an updated TPD (tetanus, polio, diphtheria) vaccine and a hepatitis A vaccine.
