The currency used in Zambia is the Zambian kwacha (ZMW). It is the official currency of Zambia and is subdivided into 100 ngwee. The currency is issued and regulated by the Bank of Zambia. Banknotes are available in denominations of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 kwacha, while coins are available in denominations of 1, 5, 10, and 50 ngwee, as well as 1 kwacha.
It’s important to note that while the Zambian kwacha is the legal tender in Zambia, U.S. dollars are also widely accepted in certain establishments, particularly in tourist areas or for larger transactions.
In Zambia, the standard power sockets and plugs used are of Type C, Type D, and Type G.
Type C sockets have two round pins and are similar to the Europlug. Type D sockets also have three round pins in a triangular configuration. Type G sockets have three rectangular pins and are commonly used in the United Kingdom and many other countries.
The voltage used in Zambia is 230 volts, and the frequency is 50 Hz. However, Zambia is a linguistically diverse country, and there are also several major indigenous languages spoken by different ethnic groups. Some of the prominent local languages in Zambia include:
- Bemba: Spoken by the Bemba people in the northern and central parts of the country. It is one of the most widely spoken indigenous languages in Zambia.
- Nyanja: Also known as Chewa, it is spoken by the Chewa people and is widely understood and spoken in the urban areas of Zambia.

If you are travelling to Zambia from areas known to be infected with yellow fever, you must have a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. We advise our guests to also have an updated TPD (tetanus, polio, diphtheria) vaccine and a hepatitis A vaccine.
