Zambia, a landlocked country in southern Africa, boasts an incredible array of natural wonders and wildlife, making it a thrilling and unforgettable destination for safari enthusiasts. With its vast wilderness areas, diverse ecosystems, and abundant wildlife, Zambia offers an authentic and off-the-beaten-path safari experience that is sure to captivate the adventurous traveller.

One of Zambia’s greatest attractions is its pristine national parks and game reserves. South Luangwa National Park, located in the eastern part of the country, is renowned for its unrivalled walking safaris. Walking through the park allows visitors to immerse themselves in the sights, sounds, and smells of the African bush, providing a unique and intimate encounter with nature. The park is home to an impressive variety of wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, and a multitude of bird species. Additionally, the Luangwa River, which meanders through the park, attracts a large concentration of hippos and crocodiles, offering excellent opportunities for boat safaris.

Another jewel in Zambia’s safari crown is the Lower Zambezi National Park. Situated along the banks of the mighty Zambezi River, this park offers a magnificent backdrop for wildlife viewing. Visitors can explore the park through game drives, canoe safaris, and walking safaris, granting them a chance to encounter elephants, buffalos, zebras, lions, and an abundance of birdlife. The park is also renowned for its incredible fishing opportunities, with the Zambezi River teeming with tiger fish and other species.

Kafue National Park, Zambia’s largest national park, is a hidden gem that beckons safari enthusiasts seeking solitude and unspoiled wilderness. Its diverse landscapes encompass vast grassy plains, woodland areas, and the beautiful Kafue River. This park is home to an impressive array of wildlife, including cheetahs, wild dogs, antelopes, hippos, crocodiles, and over 500 bird species. With its expansive size and relatively low visitor numbers, Kafue National Park offers a sense of exclusivity and a chance to explore uncharted territories.

For those seeking a unique and adrenaline-pumping safari experience, Zambia’s Liuwa Plain National Park is the place to be. This remote and wild park is home to one of Africa’s most remarkable spectaclesβ€”the second-largest wildebeest migration on the continent. Witnessing thousands of wildebeests crossing the plains amidst the backdrop of breathtaking sunsets is a sight that will forever be etched in the memory of any traveller fortunate enough to visit Liuwa Plain.

In addition to its exceptional wildlife, Zambia also boasts the magnificent Victoria Falls, one of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders. The falls, locally known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning “The Smoke that Thunders,” is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a must-see attraction for visitors to Zambia. The sheer power and beauty of the falls, as well as the opportunity to engage in thrilling activities such as white-water rafting, bungee jumping, and helicopter rides, make Victoria Falls a truly unforgettable experience.

Zambia’s commitment to conservation and sustainable tourism practices further enhances its appeal as a safari destination. The country has a strong focus on community-based conservation initiatives, ensuring that local communities benefit from tourism activities while actively participating in wildlife conservation efforts.

The currency used in Zambia is the Zambian kwacha (ZMW). It is the official currency of Zambia and is subdivided into 100 ngwee. The currency is issued and regulated by the Bank of Zambia. Banknotes are available in denominations of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 kwacha, while coins are available in denominations of 1, 5, 10, and 50 ngwee, as well as 1 kwacha.

It’s important to note that while the Zambian kwacha is the legal tender in Zambia, U.S. dollars are also widely accepted in certain establishments, particularly in tourist areas or for larger transactions.

In Zambia, the standard power sockets and plugs used are of Type C, Type D, and Type G.

Type C sockets have two round pins and are similar to the Europlug. Type D sockets also have three round pins in a triangular configuration. Type G sockets have three rectangular pins and are commonly used in the United Kingdom and many other countries.

The voltage used in Zambia is 230 volts, and the frequency is 50 Hz. If you are traveling to Zambia from a country with a different type of plug or voltage, you may need a plug adapter or voltage converter to use your electronic devices. It is always a good idea to check the specific requirements for your devices before traveling.

When packing for a safari in Zambia, it’s important to consider the specific requirements and recommendations for the trip. Here’s a suggested packing list keeping in mind the soft bag weight limitation of 20 kg and the availability of free laundry in the camps:

Clothing:

  • Lightweight, breathable, and neutral-colored clothing for hot weather
  • Long-sleeved shirts and pants to protect against sunburn and insects
  • T-shirts, shorts, and skirts for daytime wear
  • Sweater or jacket for cooler evenings
  • Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots
  • Sandals or flip-flops for relaxing in camp
  • Wide-brimmed hat or cap for sun protection
  • Swimsuit (if there are swimming opportunities)
  • Socks and underwear
  • Sleepwear

Outdoor Gear:

  • Binoculars for wildlife viewing
  • Camera with extra batteries and memory cards
  • Hat with a strap to keep it secure during game drives
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen (preferably eco-friendly)
  • Lightweight rain jacket or poncho

Miscellaneous:

  • Personal medications
  • Travel adapter and chargers for electronic devices
  • Headlamp or flashlight with spare batteries
  • Cash, credit cards, and necessary travel documents (e.g., passport, visas)

Remember to pack efficiently and avoid overpacking, as you will have limited space in a soft bag. Plan your outfits based on the duration of your safari (3-4 days) and the availability of free laundry services in the camps. Layering clothing is recommended to adapt to changing weather conditions throughout the day.

The official language of Zambia is English. English serves as the language of government, commerce, and education. However, Zambia is a linguistically diverse country, and there are also several major indigenous languages spoken by different ethnic groups. Some of the prominent local languages in Zambia include:

  1. Bemba: Spoken by the Bemba people in the northern and central parts of the country. It is one of the most widely spoken indigenous languages in Zambia.
  2. Nyanja: Also known as Chewa, it is spoken by the Chewa people and is widely understood and spoken in the urban areas of Zambia.
  3. Tonga: Spoken by the Tonga people, primarily in the Southern Province of Zambia.
  4. Lozi: Spoken by the Lozi people, particularly in the Western Province of Zambia.
  5. Lunda: Spoken by the Lunda people in the Northwestern Province.
  6. Luvale: Spoken by the Luvale people in the western part of Zambia.
  7. Kaonde: Spoken by the Kaonde people in the Northwestern Province.

These are just a few examples of the many languages spoken in Zambia. It’s important to note that while English is widely understood, especially in urban areas and among educated individuals, knowing a few basic phrases in the local language can be helpful and appreciated when interacting with local communities.

If you are travelling to Zambia from areas known to be infected with yellow fever, you must have a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. We advise our guests to also have an updated TPD (tetanus, polio, diphtheria) vaccine and a hepatitis A vaccine.

Certain regions of Zambia are known for their high prevalence of malaria.

Prior to your trip, it is advisable to consult with your Travel Doctor to determine if you should commence a medication regimen. Some malaria prophylaxes necessitate initiation several days prior to your vacation, as well as continued usage during and after your visit. It is recommended that you discuss with your doctor which specific prophylactic medication would be most suitable for you.
