Volcanoes National Park, part of the Virunga Massif, is home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population. In addition to gorilla trekking, Rwanda offers other primate encounters. Nyungwe Forest National Park, located in the southwestern part of the country, is a haven for chimpanzees and other primates. Tour Location
The official currency of Rwanda is the Rwandan franc (RWF). It is denoted by the symbol “FRw” or “RF”. The Rwandan franc is subdivided into 100 smaller units called centimes, although centime coins are no longer in circulation. Banknotes are available in denominations of 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, and 10,000 francs. It’s important to note that the Rwandan franc is not widely accepted outside of Rwanda, so it’s advisable to exchange any leftover currency before leaving the country.
When visiting Rwanda, it is advisable to carry some local currency for day-to-day expenses, although major credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and larger establishments. USD, Euros and UK Pounds are also typically accepted.
In Rwanda, the power sockets used are Type C and Type J.
Type C sockets are the standard Europlug sockets, which have two round pins and are commonly used in many European countries. Type J sockets, on the other hand, have three round pins in a triangular pattern and are predominantly used in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, but they can also be found in Rwanda.
If you’re traveling to Rwanda from a country that uses a different type of socket, such as Type A or Type G, you will need a travel adapter to plug in your electronic devices. Travel adapters allow you to connect your devices to the local power outlets by converting the shape and/or voltage of the plug. It’s important to check the voltage compatibility of your devices as well, as Rwanda operates on a 220-volt supply at 50 Hz.
When packing for a safari in Rwanda, it’s important to keep in mind that you should pack lightly and prioritize essential items. Here’s a suggested packing list:
1. Clothing:
- Lightweight, breathable, and neutral-colored clothing (avoid bright colors)
- Long-sleeved shirts and long pants to protect against insects and the sun
- A lightweight waterproof jacket or poncho
- Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots
- Socks and underwear
- A wide-brimmed hat or cap to protect from the sun
- Swimsuit
2. Accessories and Gear:
- Binoculars for wildlife viewing
- Camera with extra batteries and memory cards
- Sunscreen with a high SPF
- Sunglasses
- Lightweight daypack for carrying essentials during game drives and walks
- Travel adapter and charger for electronics
3. Medications and Personal Items:
- Prescription medications (if applicable)
- Basic first aid kit with band-aids, antiseptic cream, and any necessary medications
- Hand sanitizer and wet wipes
- Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.)
- Travel-sized towel or handkerchief
4. Miscellaneous:

Remember to check the specific requirements and recommendations of your safari tour operator or accommodation, as they may have additional suggestions based on the activities and locations you’ll be visiting. Additionally, consider any specific weather conditions or seasonal variations during your travel dates.
Due to the typically wet and rainy nature of the forests, we recommend that you bring warm, protective attire, along with comfortable walking or hiking boots. Additionally, don’t forget to pack a hat, as well as a lightweight parka or raincoat.
In Rwanda, the official languages are Kinyarwanda, French, and English. Kinyarwanda is the most widely spoken language in the country and is used by the majority of the population as their first language. French was historically the dominant foreign language in Rwanda and is still widely spoken, particularly in business, government, and education sectors. English has been gaining prominence in recent years and is increasingly used in official settings and as a medium of instruction in schools. Additionally, Swahili is also spoken by a small portion of the population, primarily in border regions and urban areas.
A visa is required to enter Rwanda, and it is available on arrival. Thirty-day tourist visas are free for citizens of member states of the Commonwealth, the African Union, and the Francophone countries.

Although a yellow fever vaccination is not mandatory for visiting Rwanda, it is necessary if you plan to travel to Kenya and Uganda as per Rwanda’s entry requirements. It is advisable to consult your travel clinic prior to your travel.
Although Bisate is situated at a higher elevation and is not in a malaria-risk area, it is important to note that there are other regions in Rwanda, such as Magashi in Akagera National Park, where the risk of malaria exists. We strongly recommend that our guests consult their medical practitioner or travel clinic for guidance on malaria prevention. It is advisable to do this several weeks before your departure, as certain medications require a lead time before your arrival in Rwanda.
